The softshell is comfortable to wear because of its high air permeability and excellent ductility. How can one determine the level of water resistance in a particular softshell fabric, and what are the limitations of its water-repellent capabilities?
To see how well softshell fabrics can withstand water, there are several industry standard tests that show how they perform against water pressure. One common test is the water resistance test, also known as the hydrostatic head test. This test measures the fabric's ability to withstand water pressure.
During the test, a fabric sample is placed under a column of water and the pressure is gradually increased. Measure the point in millimeters of water where water begins to pass through the fabric. This measurement will tell you the water resistance rating of the fabric. For example, if a fabric is rated at 10,000 mm, it means it can withstand the pressure exerted by a 10 meter column of water before water begins to penetrate.
But here's the problem. This rating tells you about the fabric's water resistance, not whether it is completely waterproof. Softshell fabrics are typically water resistant rather than fully waterproof. Water repellency has some limitations.
Outdoor Sportswear Softshell fabrics are good for staying wet for a while in light rain or drizzle, but not for long periods of soaking in heavy rain or downpours. Over time, the water resistance of the fabric may decrease, especially with regular use.
There are weak spots near the seams. Water may seep in through the seams, but not as much as the fabric itself is water resistant. You can improve this by using waterproof tape to seal the seams, but it's not a silver bullet.
Softshell fabrics can absorb water over time, which affects breathability and makes the fabric heavier. This limits its long-term water repellent ability.
Normal use, exposure to dirt, oil, or detergent residue can reduce the water repellency of softshell fabrics. Therefore, we recommend that you follow the care instructions and reapply the water repellent treatment from time to time to maintain functionality.
In short, softshell fabrics are great for light rain and humidity, but not the best for heavy rain or prolonged wet conditions. You should choose the right level of water resistance based on what you plan to do and how long you will be out.


What types of outdoor activities are best suited for softshell garments, and when should they be preferred over hardshell or fleece alternatives?
 Softshell fabric performs well in a variety of outdoor activities, but is particularly suited for the following types of activities:
