Here are some commonly used techniques:
Heat Sealing or Welding:
Heat sealing, also known as heat welding or heat bonding, is a popular technique for sealing seams and edges of PU coated fabric. This method uses heat and pressure to fuse the layers of fabric together, creating a strong and waterproof seal.
In heat sealing, a heated tool or machine is used to apply precise heat and pressure along the seam or edge of the fabric. This heat melts the polyurethane coating on both sides of the seam, allowing them to bond together seamlessly.
Heat sealing is often used in the production of waterproof garments, bags, tents, and other outdoor gear where seam integrity is critical.
Radio Frequency (RF) Welding:
RF welding, also known as high-frequency welding, is another technique used to seal seams and edges of PU coated fabric. This method utilizes high-frequency electromagnetic energy to generate heat and fuse the fabric layers together.
In RF welding, the fabric layers are placed between two electrodes, and high-frequency energy is applied, causing the molecules in the polyurethane coating to vibrate and generate heat. This heat melts the coating, creating a strong bond between the fabric layers.
RF welding is commonly used in the production of waterproof bags, inflatable products, and medical textiles where airtight and watertight seals are required.
Ultrasonic Welding:
Ultrasonic welding is a fast and efficient technique for sealing seams and edges of PU coated fabric. This method uses high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations to create friction and heat at the seam interface, melting and bonding the fabric layers together.
In ultrasonic welding, a vibrating ultrasonic horn is pressed against the seam or edge of the fabric, causing the molecules in the polyurethane coating to heat up and fuse together. The pressure applied during welding ensures a strong and durable seal.
Ultrasonic welding is often used in the production of waterproof apparel, medical garments, and automotive textiles where precise and airtight sealing is required.
Adhesive Bonding:
Adhesive bonding involves the use of specialized adhesives or seam tapes to seal seams and edges of PU coated fabric. This method creates a waterproof barrier by bonding the fabric layers together with a strong adhesive.
In adhesive bonding, a waterproof adhesive or seam tape is applied along the seam or edge of the fabric, creating a tight seal that prevents water penetration. The adhesive is activated either by heat, pressure, or a combination of both.
Adhesive bonding is commonly used in the production of waterproof garments, outerwear, and footwear where seam sealing is essential for waterproofing.
Liquid Seam Sealants:
Liquid seam sealants are applied directly to the seams and edges of PU coated fabric to fill in any gaps or holes and create a waterproof seal. These sealants typically consist of liquid polyurethane or silicone formulations that adhere to the fabric and provide a flexible and durable seal.
Liquid seam sealants are applied using a brush, roller, or applicator, and they penetrate into the fabric fibers to create a waterproof barrier. Once applied, the sealant cures and forms a strong bond with the fabric, ensuring long-lasting waterproofing.
